La Tour de Piegut

      Piegut-Pluviers

Piegut Bed and Breakfast is situated in the Perigord Vert National Park on the confluence of the Poitou-Charente, the Haute-Vienne and the Dordogne. The area features some of the most beautiful scenery in France.

Piegut, itself, offers plenty of commerce. It has 2 bars, 2 restaurants, pharmacy, 2 butchers, 2 bakers, patisserie and lots more besides.

Throughout the year, Piegut holds 'weekends' such as a vide grenier which is like a boot sale but more up market. Every Wednesday morning, throughout the year, there is the market. It is the 2nd largest in the Dordogne and is very important to the local areas. The market is predominately food, but is all locally produced. You can buy anything from cheese to wine and even livestock. During the summer the market expands to include items such as jewellery, pottery and books.

For City visits Limoges is the closest and is World famous for its beautiful Porcelain, or Angouleme for its excellent shopping facilities and its access into Paris via TGV, it also holds a yearly event of Classic car motor-racing in September.  A little further away, but worth the trip is the City of Bordeaux. In addition to its beautiful architecture, it is home to the most famous wines in the world.

House-Hunting

The area is becoming extremely popular with the English, who are looking for holiday homes or permanent residence. The area is stunning and still offers excellent value for money. If you are here on a house-hunting mission (and why not - that's what we did) then Piegut is a perfect base to explore the Dordogne region and beyond. There are two agencies in town, both with English-speaking agents who are more than happy to help. As a couple who have made the permanent switch to France we know many of the pitfalls and would be glad to offer any advice we can.

Places to Visit :- Nontron's Market Square, La Rochefocould Chateau and Lake St Estephe.

The Perigord Vert
The Perigord Vert is famous for many things, notwithstanding its natural beauty. Chateaux are numerous, several Grottes, prehistoric caves with stalactites/mites, fantastic rock formations and prehistoric drawings.

Just 20 mins away is the town of Brantome which is known as the 'Venice of France'. This is actually an island on the River Dronne. The magnificent abbey set against hollowed out cliffs provides a stunning backdrop. The town hosts a busy market, offers canoeing, cliff walks, beautiful parks and some great restaurants.

The whole region is packed with stunning towns and villages - all with their unique charm and friendliness.

For the more energetic guests there is a 2km go-kart track 15 mins away, it has a great track through the forest and also offers quad bikes. The whole area is huge a VTT (velo toute terrain - all terrain biking) and throughout the summer there are many competitions, many going from Piegut. These tracks are mirrored with horse-trekking and walking routes. This is a very popular area for horse and foot-trekkers.

The area offers many types of Watersports with the main lakes at St Estephe (5 mins) and St Mathieu (15 mins) nearby. Both lakes are great for sunbathers and swimmers alike. They have excellent beaches (a strange concept being inland from the coast) and plenty of activities running throughout the day.

Walking

There are so many beautiful walks which make this area very popular with walkers and cyclists alike. Many trails are clearly marked (GR mapping) which cater for all abilities. Local maps are available. Often, the various communes in the area organize night walks which include meals, and of course wine. These give you the chance to meet and chat (in French) with the locals.

Angling

One of the main features of the region is its lakes. If you are a keen fisherman, we can offer advice on the best lakes in the area to fish. The numerous lakes are stocked with all varieties of fish with large carp being the most popular with our guests. If you want we can arrange your days all in advance so you can enjoy the weather and the fishing.

Golf

As a keen golfer myself, there are two excellent golf courses nearby. One is extremely challenging with water featuring on many holes most notably one hole with an island green (not for the faint-hearted). The second is also excellent but is a bit more forgiving on the wayward shots. We can book your tee-off times for you in advance of your stay (deposit reqd)

Gastronomy

This is France after all and the French do like to enjoy a meal. Some of the highlights of the area include its Foie Gras and mushrooms. If you arrive in late September and October you have the opportunity to go mushroom and truffle hunting.

If you don't like any of these, then you can sit back, relax and let the world go by.
